The Heat is On

damaged hair

Be aware, this could be a real snore for some. Read on if you dare!

Its no secret that heating tools (hairdryer, straightener, curling wands) WILL do damage and irreversible damage to your hair. Time and time again I'm sure you have heard your stylists scowled you about protecting your hair before using any heat tools.

I thought this time I would write just a little about the damage heat can do to your hair and also show you exactly what a healthy piece of hair looks like under a microscope verses an unhealthy/damaged piece. I often find most people I come across have no idea what a a strand of hair really looks like and can be quite interesting once you see it magnified.

The way that I have always tried to get my point across to my guests has been imagining boiling water (100 degrees) and thinking about the damage that can do to your skin (especially if you had boiling water on your skin for the time you would have a straightening iron on your hair) Its pretty significant damage right?  Well now think about the temperature of a hot tool, which most older irons or wands can be set at 220 degrees, newer models set them at 185 degrees. The brand I use in the salon is Cloud Nine which I have control over the temperature, so my go to temperature is 175 degrees.

The reason I set my irons that low (or that high depending if your a glass half full or half empty kind of person) is because its hot enough to achieve a smooth look that has body and bounce. But the main reason is because at that temperature (with heat protection) will do far less damage to the hair. It also won’t suck all the moisture from your hair which will stop your hair from reaching for the moisture in the air (hence why there could be frizz or fly aways). phew, say that last sentence 5 times over really fast 🤦‍♀️ rookie blogger here

If you follow Little Bonnie (@littlebonniesalon) on instagram I often put some information about the products we stock, it's a great way to learn about new brands. One of the products being the Melu range. Melu Hair Shield is a heat protecting spray up to 220 degrees so that is my go to when I'm using heating tools.
